What is the eligibility?

To be eligible for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

Option 1:

  • Education: A 4-year degree (bachelor's or equivalent).
  • Experience: At least 36 months (3 years) of project management experience.
  • Training: 35 hours of formal project management education or possession of a CAPM certification.

Option 2:

  • Education: A high school diploma, associate’s degree, or equivalent.
  • Experience: At least 60 months (5 years) of project management experience.
  • Training: 35 hours of formal project management education or possession of a CAPM certification.

The PMP exam is available year-round and does not have fixed dates.

Passing Criteria

No Fixed Passing Score: PMI does not disclose an exact passing score or scale (e.g., 70% or 80%). The exam is graded based on the difficulty level and distribution of questions.

Domain-Level Scoring: The exam is structured around three primary domains: People, Process, and Business Environment. You are expected to demonstrate proficiency across all areas, but there is no individual domain score requirement. The overall performance across all domains is assessed.

  • PMP exams are now conducted online or at computer-based testing centers (CBT) through Pearson VUE.
  • Computer-Based Testing (CBT): Available at PMI-authorized testing centers or online through proctored exams.
